Gutters as Architecture
A Study on Architectural Models and Model-Making
The core of this project focused on gutters as architecture of their own. Instead of seeing it as a minimal addition to a building, there was beauty in the system that gutters generate: a single drop of water becoming a greater whole. To represent this idea, the work was centered around a kit of parts.
Ice: the source and method of control water, an amorphous being
Mother Gutter: the starting point
Gutters: a system and network
Scaffolding: creates structure and activates
Base: holds two layers to control overflowing
Dams: promote audience interaction and refer to water infrastructures to emphasize the importance of water as a resource, material, and medium for life
During the time of presentation, a heat lamp was attached to the mother gutter to speed up the melting of the ice. In addition, an animation was played that portrayed a digital replica of the model to simulate different weather conditions like rain, which changes how this system is activated.
Apart from this project’s thematic exploration, it responded to an ongoing discourse surrounding what architectural models can be and do. The conversation continues, trying to provoke creative exploration and dialogue.
